I am now the owner of a 5” (10”) Metric Boxford CUD lathe that somehow made it to the USA, and had a few questions.I gave the lathe a thorough look and so far except for a bent cross feed screw / handle and a missing left cabinet door I think it’s a very solid project. I'm happy with zero marks in the bed, and it is considerably larger than my import 8x14 lathe. Here are the questions:The serial numbers are C-III-73191 stamped in the bed in the right place. The problem is that number is not close to any serial listed online and Boxford Spares sells parts by serial number. Since is mostly a date of manufacture issue and my lathe is the brown cabinet and the green gray upper (original paint) then is it safe to say that the machine was manufactured sometime in the 70’s?

I wrote Boxford about this and posted the serial number on the yahoo group, but so far no words back.As far as manuals I found the Boxford know your lathe book on line, then purchased the actual book used though Amazon for $25 shipped, and the parts diagrams are listed in the Boxford user groups files. Should I be on the lookout for any other manual to help with the disassembly and reassembly of the lathe?
I found a photocopy of “Boxford Training Lathes Machine Notes & Parts Manual” on eBay.uk for $20, but am unsure if the content is that much different than the other two? With a damaged cross feed screw and handle it looks to be about $200 for new replacements from Boxford, not a bad price, but since I have to buy replacement parts anyway I was thinking about trying to find used parts to convert it to a power cross feed. From Boxfords online site, there appears to be an early and late B model apron. So I would look for the later model, but is there other parts needed for the conversion besides the power apron and the different cross feed screw? I found one brief reference to a “keyed lead screw” for the later design.
If that’s the case and another metric lead screw has to be found, then I may be better off keeping the manual cross feed and ordering small new replacement parts from Boxford than trying to find and ship large used parts from a half world away. Are there any other good sources for used parts? I found these two online. The last one actually had a power apron listed, but there was no response to my email yet.
Its a cud.bud has powered crossfeed.the training one i think is called a tud.and has no leadscrew.never mind.i read cud to bud.as cud or bud.where are the screw cutting gears.you need a bunch of themnext question you will ask.AUDall the best.markjNot quite, but your almost there. Yes I know what different models CUD/BUD/AUD are and the fact that its a CUD that was never in question!Maybe the big 'CUD' on the side will give a big hint??Yes I have 3/4 of the factory change gears and the ones I don't have seem to be very available since Southbend gears will interchange. Yes I don’t doubt that there is always a better lathe out there no matter what model you currently own.
This one was a big step in the right direction for me and I’m still happy with my purchase. I have done a few more hours of searching on the internet and found that a keyed lead screw is required (either by cutting a slot in the existing screw or replacement) for the Southbend C to B conversion.
It’s probably the same way with the Boxford. I haven’t ruled out the conversion to a BUD yet though if I can find the parts reasonable. $200 is awful pricey for a bent screw why dont you straighten it out or cut off the bent section and machine a new end.You might be better off trying to find an A or AUD with a worn out bed and use it's gearbox and apron, the aprons and gearboxes are pretty bomb proof. If not you will find plenty of parts on Fleabay perhaps not on your side of the pond tho.You may find some good info here and here and here Finding a Boxford in the USA might be harder than finding a Southbend across the Atlantic. I'm not sure?
Here older worn out Southbends are common, but Boxfords are pretty hard to find in any condition.I don't mind spending a bit to get the machine going. The screw is just bent right where the handle is. I could get it close to straight, and I already bent it back some, but I figured new or unbent used parts would be the best solution. The handle is not repairable at all so that has to be replaced regardless.Yes yahoo groups are what they are, I posted the serial number question there a few days ago with no response yet. Forums get much more traffic.I have eBay.UK bookmarked with 'Boxford' so were are on the same page there! Thanks for the advice! I have a Boxford AUD lathe and it is a honey. The Southbend cross-slide is interchangable, as I have a Southbend taper attachment, which I added a few years after buying the lathe.
I don't understand the comment about 'shimming' as Boxford used Southbend drawings when they made the lathe.I would not use a SB carriage, as the Boxford Crossfeed screw handle, clutch control and dials are superior to a SB. They also improved the wings on the saddle ( square /flat, not rounded) which I ground to give a nice flat reference point or to mount mag base indicatorsThanks for the Yahoo Groups comments. I didn't know they had one.Rich. Thank you for the link and tips for dealing with John. No its not too far, I think the UK is the only source for parts unless I get very lucky.

I have looked at Johns website before and have saved it. If I cant find a used power apron then I will try and see if he can work a deal over the internet. I have a few people in my corner over there that I have sent parts to from the USA that can collect them for me. I can get parts one way or the other - even if sellers wont ship to the USA, just finding the parts is the challenge.
